Jack, A Story About a Horse
By: Ronald H. Pope
Jack, a Story about a Horse.
This story is about a horse. The story is true, well mostly true, and was told to me by my Father who is part of the story as he was there.
Many, many years ago there were few buses, cars or trucks and deliveries in most North American cities were made by horse-drawn wagons and carts. The horses plodded the streets on their daily rounds as the drivers delivered milk, bread, fruit, vegetables and blocks of ice from the wagons to houses in the neighbourhood. Even the fire wagons of the day were powered by teams of hand picked horses chosen for their speed and agility. Horses with character, personality and unusual names like 'Popcorn Bill', 'Grandpa Sam' and 'Pooch' were commonplace. The magical sounds of the familiar 'clip, clop', 'clip clop', 'clip clop' filled the air as the horse's steel shoes echoed from cobblestoned streets. Enchanted children and smiling grown-ups eagerly awaited the daily sight, sound and visit from their friend the horse. Our story is about one such horse. His name is Jack.
